We've Got the Beat!

May 26, 2017

As you know, media databases such as Meltwater and Cision provide useful information on journalists' beats. These databases help target specific journalists and include topics and subtopics to make searching easier, such as Agriculture: Dairy Farming.

To be even more precise, another idea is to take a look at a journalist's Twitter profile. Oftentimes journalists will include a bit more detail on their interests and the areas they cover. For example, Mary Clare Jalonick is an Associated Press reporter whose Twitter profile reads:

Mary Clare Jalonick

I cover Congress for The Associated Press in Washington. I also cover food policy, including USDA and FDA.
Washington D.C.
Joined April 2009

Also, see who that journalist is following on Twitter. Many of them follow their fellow reporters and you may come across additional journalists to add to your media list.

While it may take extra time, viewing journalists' Twitter profiles can provide more "intelligence" on their beats and assist you with reaching the right reporters.
