Action Needed Soon to Replace Your Website Search

November 9, 2018

Google is retiring the Google Search Appliance (GSA) at the end of 2018. In advance of this change, the University of Minnesota will adopt Google’s Custom Search Engine (CSE). The Google Custom Search Engine will be available to the University community on November 26, 2018.

What You Will Need to Do

With the upcoming change, there are several different levels of action necessary for University sites.

  1. If your site is using the University’s Drupal platform with the University's standard header and footer, no action will be required. The change from GSA to CSE will happen automatically. There will be some additional configuration options available to you, but these will not be required for search to function on your site.
  2. If you are using the University’s Drupal platform, but have custom development in your header or search results display, you must make changes to your site to implement Custom Search Engine before the deadline of December 31, 2018 or the search on your site's search will not continue to work.
  3. If your website is outside of the University’s Drupal platform, but still uses the Google Search Appliance, you must make changes to your site to implement Custom Search Engine before the deadline of December 31, 2018 or the search on your site will not continue to work.

If you would like to explore the functionality of Custom Search Engine, visit the test site: https://search-d8.dev.umn.edu/. (Please note: The sample site is actively being used for testing and development, changes to displays and settings may be ongoing.) The University of Minnesota Morris is piloting the Custom Search Engine in November. Learnings from that pilot will be shared with the project team and influence the self-help resources that are in development.

Information about steps you need to take to make updates to include the Custom Search Engine on your site will be available soon.

Please share this information with others in your units that you think would be affected by this change. If you have any questions, please contact web-search@umn.edu.
